“Literacy is the most basic currency of the knowledge economy.” — Barack Obama
The fourth Wednesday in January is Library Shelfie Day—the perfect excuse for book lovers and library fans to celebrate the shelves that spark curiosity, learning, and joy. All it takes is a selfie (or “shelfie”) with your favorite books, preferably at your local library, shared with the hashtag #LibraryShelfieDay.
But don’t stop at social media. This is also a powerful moment to let legislators and community leaders know why your library matters. By visiting your library’s website and clicking the Love Your Library image link, you can share your own library love story. Your story can be short or long, typed, handwritten, drawn, or photographed—your voice counts.
Not sure what to say? Start simple. Maybe the library helped you through a tight spot, provided access to printers, computers, Wi-Fi, or offered a welcoming place to learn, read, or connect. Perhaps a librarian went the extra mile. Maybe you look forward to story time, browsing new books, or simply enjoying a quiet, safe space. Whatever your experience, it matters.
If online sharing isn’t your thing, visit the library in person. You can write, type, color, or draw your story right there. These personal stories help decision-makers understand the real impact libraries have on individuals and communities.
As former New York Public Library president Timothy Healy once said, “The most important asset of any library goes home at night—the library staff.” Let’s celebrate them, too, by showing up, speaking out, and sharing the library love.
