“Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.” ~Harper Lee
April’s end brings May, flowers, and a celebration of the joy of reading. Get Caught Reading Month invites everyone to relish stories and facts that stretch the imagination and enrich daily life. Reading deepens our understanding of the world, sparks creativity, and builds empathy. Research repeatedly shows readers donate more to charity, expand their vocabularies, and strengthen memory and analytical skills. Whether you devour a thriller or savor a classic, reading is a gift that keeps giving.
The best way to inspire a love of reading is to model it. Let yourself be seen with a book—on the bus, during lunch, before bed—and make reading a shared habit that fosters connection and delight.
Launched in 1999 by the Association of American Publishers, Get Caught Reading Month encourages people of all ages to read anywhere, anytime. Today, The Every Child a Reader charity leads the initiative, expanding it into a year-round celebration that sparks conversations among book lovers and helps readers discover new authors and stories. Libraries and communities come alive in May with book-centered events and activities, all free with a library card. Visit your library to find your next great read—we’re happy to help—and get caught reading.
“My alma mater was books, a good library…. I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.” ~Malcolm X
