What a difference a year makes. This time last year we were enjoying weeks of beautiful, if dry weather. In fact, last year 100 percent of Polk County was experiencing the 4th worst drought in 129 years and a major water crisis. This year, it seems to rarely stop raining and many areas are at risk of flooding. According to National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), a division of National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this past April was the 10th wettest on record over the last 130 years. More rain is in the forecast. Crops, livestock, and wildlife have a sufficient water supply. The risk now is one of flash flooding. The data to predict that is also available on the NOAA website. Your library is a great place to go when the weather is grey and wet and seemingly boring. There are summer reading activities, books and movies to check out, plus, some libraries have games and puzzles. Or hop in the car with your family to participate in the Explore MORE Passport program. Visit your local library to get a passport and a stamp. Then tour a bunch of libraries, collect at least 10 stamps to enter the Explore More prize drawing. Did you know that there are 11 libraries in Polk county alone! The Passport program runs through August 31st.
